Michael Rajamathi, St. Joseph's University : Exfoliation of layered solids - a little game with building blocks

I will try to show the importance of basic science research in the development of technology taking examples from our research on Layered Solids. I will give the story of structural understanding of nickel hydroxide, the material used in NiCad batteries, which started from a simple composition analysis. This would be followed by the story of the invention of Solvothermal synthesis of nanoparticles based on textbook knowledge. In the final leg, I will discuss exfoliation of Layered Solids and its important in current nanotechnology.
