About the event

Dr. Aalok Thakkar- Ashoka University I’m a mathematician at heart, posing as a computer scientist—drawn to the limits of language, logic, and computation, and to the precise boundaries between the tractable, the intractable, and the impossible. About the talk: The Most Dangerous Idea in Mathematics

In 1891, Georg Cantor gave us set theory and then spent years battling for his peace of mind; in 1931, Kurt Gödel proved that any system of logic cannot capture all truths, and later descended into deep paranoia; in 1936, Alan Turing identified problems that no computer can ever solve, and he too met a tragic end.

These three brilliant minds circled the same dangerous idea—diagonalisation. In this talk, we’ll play with this beautifully unsettling proof technique that exposes the limits of logic and computation, and see whether it leaves you delighted, disturbed, or just a little unhinged.
