About the event

Bikash Kumar Das - Tezpur University
I’m a doctoral researcher exploring how insects and flowers create fascinating colors and unique wetting properties in nature. I love sharing science with people, writing poetry, reading about the philosophy of science, and teaching. I was also honored to receive the Child Scientist Award at the state level in the National Children’s Science Congress in 2011.
About the talk: If Physics designed a butterfly
The vibrant colors of butterfly wings captivate us, yet their origin lies not only in pigments but in microscopic and nanoscopic structures that manipulate light. When sunlight interacts with those architectures, reflection and interference produce brilliant hues, sometimes also changing with viewing angle, known as iridescence. The talk elucidates the structural origin of blue coloration in the Blue-spotted Crow butterfly and reveals how the same morphology helps the wings manage raindrops during the monsoon.
