Gravitational Lensing: Of arcs, rings, umbilics and swallow tails

Gravitational lensing is essentially bending of light by massive objects.  I will discuss the strange patterns this can produce, and how this is used by astronomers to observe distant and faint objects.  Observations also tell us about the mass doing the lensing and it will also help us estimate the expansion rate of the Universe.
